Driving Safety Forward: APTIM’s Commitment to Roadway Safety

Prioritizing Roadway Safety: Protecting Our Workforce on the Move

Whether working on a construction site adjacent to a busy highway, operating an APTIM fleet vehicle, or renting a car for a business trip, awareness and application of roadway safety principles are essential to protecting APTIM team members. Roadway hazards come in many forms, including heavy construction equipment, distracted drivers, inclement weather, and aging infrastructure. Recognizing and proactively mitigating these risks is vital to personal safety and the wellbeing of colleagues.

Understanding Common Roadway Hazards

Workers often encounter various dangers when operating vehicles or working near roadways. Speeding drivers, unpredictable traffic patterns, and impaired motorists can pose serious threats. In construction zones, heavy machinery and reduced visibility add further complexity to roadway safety. Additionally, poor weather such as rain, fog, or snow can impact a worker’s ability to react quickly, increasing the likelihood of accidents.

By recognizing and anticipating these risks, APTIM employees can take proactive measures to ensure their own safety and contribute to a safer roadway environment.

Key Roadway Safety Principles

APTIM encourages all employees to adhere to key roadway safety practices to minimize accidents and promote a culture of safety. Below are several essential principles.

  • Stay alert and avoid distractions: Whether driving or working roadside, remaining focused is paramount. Avoid using mobile devices, adjusting the radio excessively, or engaging in distracting conversations.
  • Follow speed limits and traffic laws: Speeding reduces reaction time and increases the severity of crashes. Obeying posted speed limits and road signs helps create safer driving conditions.
  • Wear high-visibility clothing: For workers stationed near roads, wearing reflective vests and bright clothing makes them more noticeable to passing motorists, reducing the risk of accidental collisions.
  • Ensure proper vehicle maintenance: Ensuring that fleet vehicles are in excellent condition—including regularly checking brakes, lights, and tire pressure—helps prevent mechanical failures that can lead to accidents.
  • Maintain safe distances: Whether driving or working on a roadside project, keeping a safe distance from other vehicles and equipment minimizes the risk of sudden collisions.
Roadway Safety in Construction Zones

As we observe National Safety Month, we challenge every APTIM team member to ask:

Workers assigned to construction projects near highways and streets face unique challenges. Work zones require specific precautions, including clear signage, traffic control measures, and designated pathways for safe movement.

Employees should always be aware of changing traffic patterns and stay within marked zones to avoid unexpected hazards. Establishing clear communication protocols among team members supports swift emergency response and helps maintain uninterrupted operations.

APTIM’s Commitment to Safety

APTIM prioritizes workplace safety by providing comprehensive training, resources, and ongoing support for employees. All operators of APTIM vehicles, commercial and non-commercial, are required to complete a defensive driver training course.

Roadway safety is not just an individual responsibility; it’s a collective effort. By practicing safe habits and staying informed about evolving transportation risks, APTIM employees help foster safer work environments and reduce the likelihood of accidents.

At APTIM, safety is at the core of everything we do. Whether on the road, at a project site, or in the office, our commitment to protecting people and communities guides our actions. By remaining vigilant, continuously improving our safety practices, and holding ourselves and each other accountable, we create a culture where every employee can return home safely.
